Just a hunch on my part, but I think elements of a deal reached in very late December between Iran and China may have been relevent to Trump’s decision on Jan 2 to go with the drone strikes at Baghdad Airport.

The Point: China, Iran work together on nuclear deal

“…here is an entire class of people — hell, not even just a class! In many cases it’s a very specific group of individuals! — whose complete failure, as leaders, as strategists, as analysts, as reporters, as prognosticators, already and in full view of the whole human race killed millions of people, destroyed a society, and fucked up an entire region of the globe… running it back! In much the same positions of authority and prominence as before. The warmongers are never ruined by their mistakes; that’s a consequence they’ll go on assigning to the whole rest of the world, until there’s no world left to bear it.”

As a long-time news junkie, this could be an AWESOME game!

Let me suggest some DLC:
Opening music to famous news shows (“Frontline” WILL NOT LEAVE MY HEAD NOW!)
“Famous” hosts like Hannity and Limbaugh.
A Historical Hosts pack with Cronkite, Reasoner, Huntley and Brinkley.
More historical hosts like Father Coughlin!
(A Julius Streitcher DLC would not be legal in Germany. Thanks for that! And skip Matt Lauer, please!)

Short answer? None. Hell, Russia and China would likely make a big show of violating them just to prove how powerless Trump is.

Not that it really matters, as sanctions that have any real teeth to them would require Congressional approval, something Trump is going to find little of if he tries to seriously go forward with this shit.

So far, all seem to be going along with McConnell’s plan, which is to hold a vote on witnesses after the Senate has heard the AoI sent from the House. The expectation being that the vote will fail on a party line, at which point the Senate Repubs go “Well, I didn’t hear anything from a direct witness,” then vote to “acquit” on the excuse that the evidence was all “hearsay.”

Hence why McConnell’s desperate ploy is to offer a “vote” on witnesses, but only after the House hands over the AoI and thus surrenders all leverage.

From the article:

They are all liars in this administration— it’s no different from Trump telling everyone to read the transcript. And these liars assume, with total justification, that MAGAts will accept their word. Yup, she’s talking about Exemption B5 in the Freedom of Information Act. Which, I would guess that she suspects will be used to quash attempts to find out what happened here.

It exempts from mandatory disclosure “inter-agency or intra-agency memorandums or letters which would not be available by law to a party other than an agency in litigation with the agency.”

Utah Flies Public Employees To Mexico To Fill Prescriptions And Isn’t That Normal AF? (Goes to Wonkette, more at the link):

Utah came up with a great idea to save big money on prescription drugs: Fly public employees who need the most expensive meds to Mexico, where they can purchase the same drugs they’d get in US America for about half what they cost here. And as an incentive, the program, called “RX Tourism,” pays airfare for the employee and one family member, plus $500 per trip to get a 90-day supply of meds. The savings in costs to the state insurance plan more than cover the cost of the travel and the $500 cash payouts. It’s such a big savings for some employers that there’s an entire niche industry built around arranging trips for Americans to purchase drugs at Mexican hospitals. The Salt Lake Tribune ran a jaw-dropping story on the arrangement Sunday.

You know, maybe what we laughingly call our healthcare “system” is completely fucked up if those are the lengths employers and states are going to so they can cover pricey prescription drugs. But at least it’s not socialism!

Here’s a good church (there are some) who genuinely deserves tax-free status:
the parish was founded in 1844, the large church was completed in 1848 (it’s architecturally significant), but the neighborhood has changed a lot in recent generations and there’s very few Episcopalians there anymore. So they pulled out the pews, the couple of dozen parishioners sit in folding chairs for morning prayer, and then the place turns into a soup kitchen for the rest of the day. 900 meals a day, M-F.

holyapostlessoupkitchen.org

They also give out socks, underwear, soap and toothbrushes, etc to the homeless, and backpacks full of non-perishable food to homeless families, or local low-income families whose kids rely on free school lunches. Volunteers and cash donations come from dozens of smaller congregations around town (multiple faiths), non-faith groups, even corporate sponsors.

We’re America, bitch

Many of Donald Trump’s critics find it difficult to ascribe to a president they consider to be both subliterate and historically insensate a foreign-policy doctrine that approaches coherence. A Trump Doctrine would require evidence of Trump Thought, and proof of such thinking, the argument goes, is scant. This view is informed in part by feelings of condescension, but it is not meritless.

But what is mainly interesting about “We’re America, Bitch” is its delusional quality.

This fella had a bad day. I laughed a few times when I shouldn’t have:

BATH (WGME) — Eighty-eight-year-old Norman Kenney says that his Friday afternoon was going smoothly.

“I had just returned from the store, parked my car, and when the door closed I heard this little ‘mew,’” Kenney said.

The retired fire chief of Bath says that he thought the sound came from his cat.

“So I looked, and it was a fox, starting to come to me,” Kenney said.

He says the fox was able to take him down after pouncing on him.

“I’m in the middle of that driveway trying to beat it off with a cane, and the cane kept breaking,” Kenney said.

The fox was put down and is being checked for rabies.
Last September Kenney was also attacked by a fox, but that time Kenney was able to stay on his feet and put the fox down himself.

Image is everything. Content is irrelevant. Law is irrelevant. Rules are meant to be broken by the GOP. After all, it’s just a bunch of Muslims who aren’t real Americans.

That’s the GOP line and GOP way. They don’t care that this is illegal and improper conduct that violates the rights of these American citizens - mostly because the GOP doesn’t consider them to be American (they’re not real Americans because they aren’t white and they aren’t GOP supporters).

This is a logical end when the GOP is a white nationalist party intent on imposing their fundamentalist Christian views on everyone and treats those who disagree as unAmerican.

They regard strawmen and half-truths (“Confederates were Democrats!”) as the very height of rhetorical trickery and wit and the ideal way to own the “thinks-they’re-smart libruls.” Right wing media and political strategists (including their Russian allies) have identified and mapped goober ignorance and resentment, fed it for 50 years, and mobilized it into a voting bloc.

I pay more taxes so the churches can have unfathomable slush funds. And it’s not just $100 billion. There’s also something like $32 billion in publicly held stocks and properties for this particular organization. What is irritating is that this church tells even the poor and destitute to pay 10 percent. Even if it’s a choice between feeding your kids and paying tithing, pay tithing. There was an NPR piece on that this weekend. Seems that doctors discriminate against black folks in pain - not wanting to prescribe opioids because of the perception that blacks are *more likely to become junkies*.

Yep. Stop for a second. Second part is coming.

Other perception: blacks have a higher pain tolerance, and thus don’t need meds.

OK, at this point I was yelling at the radio & may have swerved a bit.

Result has been that black folks haven’t been drowned by Purdue Pharma et al. in oxy pills for the last 20 years, and thus don’t have as high an instance of opioid addiction.

But eventually Sully reconsidered his views and then supported Obama. When Eric discontinued his blog, I started following Sully, who seemed reasonable in those days, but I really had failed to pay sufficient attention to his 1990’s support for Charles Murray and the Bell Curve (a vile, dishonest piece of work) and his misogyny. It does seem as though that, after Obama gave him SSM, he started reverting to his racist Tory heritage and now he has returned to full-blown white supremacism. He is an example of how sanity can be a brief interlude in someone’s history — that the pull of racism can overcome rational thoughts.

Oh yeah, and black folks will sell the pills rather than take them.

But never fear! Purdue Pharma et al. have noticed that black folks aren’t as addicted to their pain meds as the whites.

Why, that’s a market opportunity!

So the pharmabros are hard at work on marketing campaigns to reach out to black/brown communities, to convince them that taking opioids (that are paid for by Medicare) is a REALLY GOOD IDEA.

BTW, do we know that that Arabic translation is, in fact, a copy of the original, delivered at the same time as the original “draft”? (Neither document is signed, I notice). I mean, even in this day and age I don’t think everything should be dismissed as fake unless reliably proven otherwise - but when the Trump clownshow is involved, more than the usual dose of skepticism is warranted.

Also: the Arabic letter has a bunch of extra text in the lower left corner: too much to hope that it says: “ignore this letter”???

Team Trump knew what they were doing was wrong. Then then lied about it (which shows they knew it was wrong). What’s clear in all this is they don’t ever exhibit, any of them, a sense of duty or service to the public in their actions. Everything is driven by deals and schemes to make money. Gordon Gecko public service.

The main reason Sully became an Obama fan is… being HIV+ used to be grounds to deny entry at the airport. Sully couldn’t visit his family, or go to his college reunion, because he was afraid he wouldn’t be allowed back into the country. Candidate Obama promised to change that rule. The Iraq thing was a tangential reason that he only adopted to keep people from noticing too quickly that his true motive was entirely personal.

Who knew hillbilly heroin would become such a scourge?

The yokels are still scarfing it up as fast as they can. Only now, since the crackdown & disruption of heroin supplies, it’s mostly powdered milk mixed with fentanyl. Problem is, you can cut heroin down to 20% and if you’re off in a small batch and it’s up to 40%.

(Quick check to research street-level purity and HOLY SHIT!)

Turns out that purity can range from 11% in Canada, to 44% in England, to 60% in Australia!!!

Guess being close to the supply lines from Afghanistan & the Golden Triangle means the junkies in Sydney get a lot more bang for the buck.

217
Khal Wimpo (the extinguisher of tiki torches)  Jan 7, 2020 • 10:07:14am

… anyway, fentanyl is so fucking powerful, that you have to cut it down to 99% filler, 1% drugs. And it STILL will knock you on your ass.

Make a small mistake, or the powder clumps up a bit, and that 1% can become 3%. Or 5%.

Which means that the strength goes up 300% or 500%. Instant OD.

Get the NarCan syringes ready, oh ye hillbillies, for the batches of fentanyl are headed your way.

I’ve done enough time as an action officer for these kinds of government documents. I’m guessing it’s in Farsi, not Arabic, although I don’t know either language. I’d assume the extra text is the translator’s name and details. It depends from country to country which language(s) the document is delivered in, but in this case the Iranians probably wouldn’t put their translation on a US DoD letterhead. ETA: Obviously, you only do the translation on the finished approved document; otherwise, if you make a change to it you have to send it through again.

Most official documents are delivered electronically, even at high levels, and you won’t be able to do much with an electronic signature between different governments, so it’s either a picture of a signature or just the text of the name as signature. So having a blank signature block in the final document wouldn’t be strange.

Any document of significance gets formally staffed per a checklist, and nobody is going to “accidentally” send out a draft to the fucking recipient before that. Drafts are marked DRAFT all over them to avoid this kind of thing. I have no idea what actually happened here because this kind of confusion would not be possible if there had been any sort of normal process for this.
